Event 1 – Training of Trainers on Human Library method
Participation: The event involved 9 citizens, including 2 participants from the city of Slavonski Brod (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Bologna, (Italy), 3 participants from the city of Wroclaw (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Brasov (Romania), 2 participants from the city of Novo Mesto (Slovenia).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in Youth Centre Slavonski Brod (Slavonski Brod, Croatia), from 16/01/2019 to 16/01/2019.
Short Description: During the Training, representatives of 5 partner organizations were introduced with the Human Library method, how to apply the methodology in the project and instructed in the organization of events, making videos and writing website articles.
Event 2 – Training of Trainers on Human Library method: Public workshop on “Gamification of history and citizenship education”
Participation: The event involved 33 citizens, including 19 participants from the city of Slavonski Brod (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Bologna (Italy), 3 participants from the city of Wroclaw (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Brasov (Romania), 2 participants from the city of Novo Mesto (Slovenia), 1 participant from the city of Tomica (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Kujnik (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Stari Perkovci (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Izmir (Turkey), 1 participant from the city of Cagliari (Italy), 2 participants from the city of Marseille (France).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in Youth Centre Slavonski Brod (Slavonski Brod, Croatia), from 17/01/2019 to 17/01/2019.
Short Description: During the event, participants were introduced to the approach of gamification and its benefit as working method for targeting youngsters and increase their interest and attention. Moreover, challenges and opportunities of gamification in teaching were discussed. Types of gamification techniques were shown, together with how to apply gamification techniques to History and citizen education.
Event 3 – Human Library event I in Romania
Participation: The event involved 46 citizens, including 14 participants from Bod Middle School (Brașov County, Romania), 32 participants from Transylvania University of Brașov (Brașov, Romania).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in Casa Baciu (Brașov, Romania), from 16/04/2019 to 16/04/2019.
Short description: Three Living books were invited to the event: general-in-reserve Ion Petrescu, former army child in the Romanian army in WWII, mayor-in-reserve Al. Corpade and museographer Traian Dumbrăveanu. The participants listened to their direct or indirect war memories and asked for details in subjects they deemed interesting.
Event 4 – Human Library event II in Romania
Participation: The event involved 50 citizens, including 50 participants from Transylvania University of Brașov (Brașov, Romania).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in building N of Transylvania University of Brașov (Brașov, Romania), from 17/05/2019 to 17/05/2019.
Short description: Three Living Books were invited to the event: prof. Maria Leluțiu, painter Mircea Vladimir Bârsan and eng. Radu Bellu. The first two shared their traumatic childhood experiences from the war time, the latter talked about the effects of the bombings from Ploiești and Bucharest (Romania) on the civillians and about the role of the Romanian Railways in the war. Several participants wished to listen to all three “living books” successively.
Event 5 – Human Library event in Italy
Participation: The event involved 45 citizens, including 34 participants from the city of Bologna (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Vicenza (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Sasso Marconi (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Castel Maggiore (Italy), 2 participants from the city of Pianoro (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Valsamoggia (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Baricella (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Budrio (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Medicina (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Argelato (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Comacchio (Italy).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in Aldini-Valeriani Institute (Bologna, Italy), from 04/06/2019 to 04/06/2019.
Short description: During the event, young people (mostly students) met direct and indirect witnesses of WWII. According to the Human Library methodology, participants were divided into small groups; each of them chose a Living Book from the “catalogue” proposed in order to listen to his or her life experience.
Event 6 – Human Library event in Slovenia
Participation: The event involved 55 citizens, including 29 participants from Novo mesto (Slovenia), 4 participants from Krško (Slovenia), 4 participants from Trebnje (Slovenia), 3 participants from Dvor (Slovenia), 2 participants from Dobrnič (Slovenia), 1 participant from Krmelj (Slovenia), 1 participant from Mirna Peč (Slovenia), 1 participant from Črnomelj (Slovenia), 1 participant from Metlika (Slovenia), 1 participant from Mokronog (Slovenia), 1 participant from Šentjernej (Slovenia), 1 participant from Trebelno (Slovenia), 1 participant from Škocjan (Slovenia), 1 participant from Štefan (Slovenia), 1 participant from Otočec (Slovenia), 1 participant from Šmarješke Toplice (Slovenia), 1 participant from Kočevje (Slovenia), 1 participant from the city of Zemun (Serbia).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in HIša kulinarike (Novo mesto, Slovenia) from 13/06/2019 to 13/06/2019.
Short description: During the event young people met with the witnesses of the Second World War. According to the Human Library methodology, the participants (readers) were divided into smaller groups and together they decided which book, witness of the WWII, they will read, whose life experience from the war they want to listen to. Young people listened to the story of the book and asked questions that were of interest for them.
Event 7 – Human Library event in Croatia
Participation: The event involved 49 citizens, including 37 participants from the city of Slavonski Brod (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Povlja(Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Kujnik (Croatia), 2 participants from the city of Oriovac (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Stari Perkovci (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Donji Andrijevci (Croatia), 2 participants from the city of Bukovlje (Croatia), 3 participants from the city of Tomica(Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Gornja Vrba (Croatia).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in the City Library Slavonski Brod (Slavonski Brod, Croatia), from 20/09/2019 to 20/09/2019.
Short description: During the event, young people (mostly students) met of WWII. Participants were divided into groups following the methodology of Human Library; each of them chose a Living Book to read from the “catalogue”, so to listen to his or her experience.
Event 8 – Human Library event in Poland
Participation: The event involved 29 citizens, including 29 participants from the city of Wrocław (Poland).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in Sektor 3 (Wrocław, Poland) – conference spaces for NGOs, from 04/10/2019 to 04/10/2019.
Short description: During the event, young people (mostly high school students) met direct and indirect witnesses of WWII. A catalogue was created with all the Living Books, so that participants, divided into small groups, could choose a Living Book and get to know his or her life experience.
Event 9 – Dissemination event in Croatia
Participation: The event involved 35 citizens, including 26 participants from the city of Slavonski Brod (Croatia), 3 participants from the city of Novska (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Povlja (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Kujnik (Croatia), 2 participants from the city of Oriovac (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Gornja Vrba (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Stari Perkovci (Croatia).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in Youth Centre Slavonski Brod (Slavonski Brod, Croatia), from 10/12/2019 to 10/12/2019.
Short description: During the session of the Slavonski Brod Youth Parliament on the occasion of Human Rights Day, two Living Books were telling their stories to students and members of Youth Parliament Slavonski Brod.
Event 10 – Urban Trekking in Poland
Participation: The event involved 77 citizens, including 1 participant from the city of Długołęka (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Żerków (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Rymanów (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Oława (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Kamieniec Ząbkowicki (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Dobrzeń Wielki (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Gościce (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Zielona Góra (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Leszno (Poland), 2 participants from the city of Oleśnica (Poland), 66 participants from the city of Wrocław (Poland).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in Wrocław (Wrocław, Poland) from 20/11/2019 to 21/11/2019.
Short description: The aim of the event was to create and implement a city game to broaden knowledge about history of Wrocław connected to WWII among young people. For 3 hours youngsters were divided into groups and tried to accomplish the tasks that were given to them at 10 different spots in the city. The game was created in 2 language version (Polish and English). The example of the tasks: taking photos, recording video, drawing, searching photos, making research by asking people around.
Event 11 – Urban Trekking I in Romania
Participation: The event involved 30 citizens, including 25 participants from Transylvania University of Brașov (Brașov, Romania), 1 participant from Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, 4 participants from CRIFST (Romanian Comitee for History and Philosophy of Science and Technology of the Romanian Academy).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in some towns from Transylvania (Brașov, Rupea, Sighișoara. Romania), from 06/12/2019 to 06/12/2019.
Short description: Heroic monuments in Brașov, Bod, Rupea, Sighișoara and Oarba de Mureș were visited. During the visit the price of the war for the locals of Brașov County was mentioned (every village has its own heroes), as well as the evolution of the front in Transylvania and the behaviour of Romanian soldiers in the dramatic situations that this brought about.
Event 12 – Urban Trekking II in Romania
Participation: The event involved 35 citizens, including 35 participants from Transylvania University of Brașov (Brașov, Romania).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in Brașov City (Brașov, Romania), from 08/01/2020 to 08/01/2020.
Short description: The places in the city affected by the bombings from 1944 were highlighted and archived photo and video materials about the WWII events in Brașov from the Mureșenilor House Museum collection were presented.
Event 13 – Urban Trekking in Italy
Participation: The event involved 26 citizens, including 8 participants from the city of Bologna (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Cosenza (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Giugliano (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Berlin (Germany), 1 participant from the city of Riga (Latvia), 1 participant from the city of Gjilan (Kosovo), 1 participant from the city of Plovdiv (Bulgaria), 7 participants from the city of Poznan (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Vignola (Italy), 1 participant form the city of Ancona (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Vinovo (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Cernusco Lombardone (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Anzola dell’Emilia (Italy).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in Bologna city center (Bologna, Italy), from 27/01/2020 to 27/01/2020.
Short description: The aim of the event was visiting the most meaningful places concerning the World War II in Bologna city centre: square and historical buildings that were bombed, air-shelter, plaques and memorial statues and battles zones. The itinerary took almost three hours and also international students have been involved. The story and the historical meaning of each place was explained by volunteers or living books who participated in the project.
Event 14 – Urban Trekking in Slovenia
Participation: The event involved 24 citizens, including 9 participants from Novo mesto (Slovenia), 5 participants from Dolenjske Toplice (Slovenia), 3 participants from Mirna (Slovenia), 1 participant from Otočec (Slovenia), 1 participant from Krško (Slovenia), 1 participant from Šmarješke Toplice (Slovenia), 1 participant from Metlika (Slovenia), 1 participant from Boštanj (Slovenia), 1 participant from Žužemberk (Slovenia), 1 participant from Leskovec pri Krškem (Slovenia).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in Grammar School in Novo mesto (Novo Mesto, Slovenia) from 30/01/2020 to 30/01/2020.
Short description: The aim of the event was to show young participants, since the actual walk through the city was not possible, the city’s most meaningful historical places and monuments, connected with Second World War, through pictures and written materials.
We decided to prepare the event in the Grammar School (that celebrates 270 years of existence), because the school is one of the most important historical buildings also from that era. The worker of the DRPD Novo mesto explained the importance of the Second World War and the places, monuments and plaques in Novo mesto (which was surrounded by barb wire during the war, hence the title of the event) and surrounding area to the youngsters. Because the participants were very keen to know more about the WWII, in the end of the event few interviews of the witnesses of the war were shown to them.
Event 15 – Urban Trekking in Croatia
Participation: The event involved 13 citizens, including 10 participants from the city of Slavonski Brod (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Povlja (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Kujnik (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Gornja Vrba (Croatia).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in Slavonski Brod city center (Slavonski Brod, Croatia), from 31/01/2020 to 31/01/2020.
Short description: The aim of the event was visiting the most meaningful places concerning the World War II in Slavonski Brod city centre: Sava river with the bridge, the central square, Brod Fortress, old villa, Railroad Station and the Factory – the only ammo factory in NDH. The itinerary took two hours. The story and the historical meaning of each place was explained by volunteer Tomislav Kaučić.
Event 16 – Final international conference
Participation: The event involved 55 citizens, including 24 participants from the city of Bologna (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Perugia (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Vignola (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Reggio Emilia (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Olaine (Latvia), 1 participant from the city of Crnomelj (Slovenia), 1 participant from the city of Wroclaw (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Brasov (Romania), 1 participant from the city of Slavonski Brod (Croatia), 1 participant from the city of Bruxelles (Belgium), 1 participant from the city of Medicina (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Berlin (Germany), 5 participants from the city of Czestochowa (Poland), 1 participant from the city of Ancona (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Anzola dell’Emilia (Italy), 1 participant from the city of Brax (France), 1 participant form the city of Cosenza (Italy), 11 participants from the city of Poznan (Poland).
Location/ Dates: The event took place in Regione Emilia Romagna, Viale della Fiera 8, rooms C and D (Bologna, Italy), from 17/01/2020 to 17/01/2020.
Short description: The aim of the event was to share the results of “Active Telling, Active Learning” project achieved in the five European countries and encourage debate on remembrance. Representatives from Croatian, Romanian, Slovenian, Polish and Italian organizations attended. During the conference, each organization shared experiences and materials from Human Library events and other activities implemented. At the end of the conference, discussion tables (world café) were formed. Each table had a specific theme concerning the Human Library method or remembrance of WWII. Lastly, each table reported the main conclusions of the discussions.
